Manchester United and England great Sir Bobby Charlton has died aged 86, his family have announced in a statement lottery
Charlton was a key member of England’s victorious 1966 World Cup team and also enjoyed great success at club level with United, who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968 lottery
A statement on behalf of the Charlton family said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning lottery

”The statement added: “His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him lottery
“We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time lottery
”Charlton’s European Cup success at United came 10 years after the Munich air disaster, which he and team manager Sir Matt Busby survived but which claimed the lives of eight of Charlton’s team-mates lottery
Born in Ashington on October 11 1937, Charlton played in the World Cup final alongside his brother Jack, who died aged 85 in 2020, and won 106 caps for England, scoring 49 goals lottery
He made his debut for United in 1956 and went on to play 758 matches for the Red Devils, scoring 249 goals lottery
Both were long-standing club records until they were overtaken by Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney respectively lottery
Charlton won three league three titles and one FA Cup at Old Trafford and, after leaving United in 1973 and becoming Preston manager, he returned to Old Trafford 11 years later as a club director lottery
He was knighted for services to lottery football in 1994 lottery

”Charlton made his England debut against Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1958, just over two months after he had survived the Munich air disaster lottery
He was not selected for England’s 1958 World Cup squad that summer, but played at the tournament in 1962, 1966 and 1970 lottery
Charlton scored three times at the 1966 World Cup, including both goals in the 2-1 semi-final victory over Portugal, and ended his England career at the age of 32 following the quarter-final exit to West Germany in 1970 lottery

The boss of Channel Tunnel operator Getlink, Yann Leriche, has welcomed the prospect of passenger rail competition lottery between London and Paris lottery
A new operator, Evolyn, has vowed to launch services in competition with Eurostar, which has held a monopoly on the route since 1994 lottery
Evolyn, which has Spanish backers, plans a new fleet of 12 trains for the service lottery
The Getlink chief executive told BBC Today: “It is great news – great news for customers, for the environment and for our group, of course, as it will unlock the growth potential of the UK to Europe high-speed passenger market lottery
“There is still room for more than doubling the traffic in the Channel Tunnel lottery

“We don’t know yet what these other destinations will be, but the arrival of Evolyn will most certainly speed up the opening of new routes to Germany or Switzerland, for example lottery
“We have made our own analysis and shown that those countries, Switzerland and Germany, have great potential lottery
So we can expect in the coming years, direct services from London to Frankfurt, Cologne, Zurich or Geneva, for example lottery
”But the trainmaker Alstom has dampened optimism about the new entrant’s prospects lottery
Evolyn appeared to imply a deal had been agreed for a dozen new trains for the Channel Tunnel operation lottery
The manufacturer then issued a statement saying: “Alstom and Evolyn have established a short-term agreement to proceed with initial train system engineering activities with the objective of accelerating activities, should the parties eventually enter into a contract for the purchase and delivery of a certain number of trains, provided that Evolyn is capable of securing project financing lottery
“With regards to potential future delivery dates for new trains, at this time, the final train delivery dates will be confirmed when a firm and final contract will be agreed upon, to be signed at a later date lottery
