England have called up Brydon Carse to their World Cup squad in India, with Joe Root claiming the seamer could inherit Liam Plunkett’s mantle as master of the middle overs grabpay
Struggling England lost their leading wicket-taker during Saturday’s record-breaking defeat by South Africa, when Reece Topley fractured his left index finger fielding off his own bowling grabpay
Head coach Matthew Mott initially suggested there was no guarantee another seamer would be brought in as his replacement, inviting the likes of Jason Roy, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson and Rehan Ahmed into the conversation, but Carse’s selection maintains the status quo grabpay
The 28-year-old was the next seamer in line and may have made a stronger push for the original 15-man squad had he not suffered injury issues of his own over the summer grabpay
He was ultimately overtaken by Surrey’s Gus Atkinson, but will now link up with the group in Bengaluru grabpay
Thursday’s game against Sri Lanka will probably come too soon for Carse, who has taken 14 wickets in 12 ODIs to date, but with questions surrounding a team that has lost three out of their first four games he will hope to push hard for a chance grabpay
England have never quite found their heir to Plunkett, the 2019 World Cup winner who nailed a tricky role through the middle of the innings, and Root believes Carse could carry that baton grabpay
“Brydon is a brilliant all-round package grabpay
He scores some handy runs for you, is very dynamic in the field and he’s got a unique wicket-taking ability,” said Root grabpay
“He’s got that Ben Stokes element to him where you sometimes feel like nothing is happening and then he’ll pick up wickets, almost in a ‘Junior Plunkett’ kind of way grabpay
He’s very similar grabpay
”Plunkett was often undervalued for his role in England’s white-ball revolution but played a crucial role in the 2019 final and was the only squad member to enjoy a 100 per cent record at the tournament grabpay
“Pudsey (Plunkett) won’t like me saying this, but he’s almost got more to offer with the bat,” Root continued grabpay
“He’s probably not got as much to offer in the dressing-room just yet, but he’s a big personality too and a great character to have around, so he’s a good addition grabpay
Whenever someone comes in and they’re excited, and you can see it on their face straightaway, a smile is infectious isn’t it?“It can bring the best out of everyone and having that come into the group can’t be a bad thing for sure grabpay

England captain Owen Farrell has hit out at the abuse directed at Tom Curry after the flanker’s allegation that South Africa hooker Bongi Mbonambi directed a racial slur at him grabpay
Curry has been the target of threats on social media after alleging that Mbonambi called him a “white c***” during England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to the Springboks last Saturday grabpay
Curry’s club, Sale Sharks, said that they were “absolutely appalled” by the “nature and level” of abuse grabpay
A World Rugby investigation into the incident is ongoing, with no conclusion likely until after Saturday’s World Cup final grabpay
Steve Borthwick has picked Curry to start on the blindside in England’s bronze medal match against Argentina on Friday evening grabpay
Farrell has slammed those sending his teammate abuse, believing it reflects a broken culture of social media criticism and abuse grabpay
South Africa’s Bongi Mbonambi and England’s Tom Curry (PA)“He’s been first class, like he always is, this week,” Farrell said of Curry grabpay
“What isn’t understandable is the amount of abuse he’s got [and] the effect that that has, not just on him grabpay
“That is the bit that I, and we, really don’t understand grabpay
And I know it seems to be going more and more like this, but it shouldn’t be, it shouldn’t be grabpay
“You are dealing with people, with human beings grabpay
Just because you’re saying stuff on your phone or behind a computer screen doesn’t make doesn’t make it acceptable grabpay
It seems to be going more and more this way, and I don’t think it’s acceptable grabpay
It doesn’t make me look fondly on engaging with people outside of the people that are close to you grabpay
“[Curry] is one of the most honest, most hardworking blokes I’ve ever played with grabpay
I hope he knows that everybody close to him, supports him, and backs him all the way grabpay
”It was thought that Borthwick might leave the flanker out of his matchday 23 to face Argentina given the ongoing situation grabpay
However, Borthwick insisted on Wednesday that Curry was “desperate to play” as England look to sign off their tournament on a high grabpay
“This is not a Tom Curry incident,” Borthwick stressed grabpay
“Somebody has said something in a game that he has reported and now this is a World Rugby and South Africa Rugby matter to deal with, not an England rugby or a Tom Curry matter grabpay
Tom Curry is set to feature against Argentina (PA)“I chatted to Tom early in the week grabpay
I think everyone saw when he came off that pitch when I took him off on Saturday night, he was cut and bloodied and exactly how Tom Curry plays grabpay
“So I chatted to him about how he was physically with another six-day turnaround and he looked straight at me and point blank said: ‘I am desperate to play on Friday night grabpay
’“This guy wants to play grabpay
There is no doubt in my mind, he wants to be out there on Friday night and the way he has prepared through the week has been incredible grabpay
But that is Tom Curry grabpay
It is the way he does it every single week so I couldn’t be more proud of him from that side grabpay
